{"id":2342,"date":"2022-03-02T09:55:08","date_gmt":"2022-03-02T09:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mmiu.ch\/rgnews2022\/?p=2342"},"modified":"2022-03-03T21:04:21","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T21:04:21","slug":"sympathetic-glances-arent-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mmiu.ch\/rgnews2022\/index.php\/2022\/03\/02\/sympathetic-glances-arent-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"Sympathetic glances aren\u2019t enough"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cHalf of my friends self-harm or have a self-harm his\u00adto\u00adry\u201d, says a female stu\u00addent from my school, the Real\u00adgym\u00adna\u00adsi\u00adum Zurich, Switzer\u00adland.&nbsp; This has become almost the \u201cnew nor\u00admal\u201d, at least in my sur\u00adround\u00adings, because so many peo\u00adple seem to know some\u00adone strug\u00adgling with self-harm in one form or another.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What exact\u00adly is self-harm\u00ading? Self-harm\u00ading, also known as non-sui\u00adci\u00addal self-injury (NSSI), is defined by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/publications\/truth-about-self-harm\" target=\"_blank\">UK Men\u00adtal Health Foun\u00adda\u00adtion<\/a> as behav\u00adiors that cause inten\u00adtion\u00adal injuries. The most com\u00admon exam\u00adples are cut\u00adting, burn\u00ading, punch\u00ading or hit\u00adting parts of the&nbsp;body.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my inter\u00adview with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.norberthaensli.ch\/\">Nor\u00adbert H\u00e4nsli<\/a>, a fed\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly recog\u00adnised spe\u00adcial\u00adist psy\u00adchol\u00ado\u00adgist for psy\u00adchother\u00ada\u00adpy, I learned of some forms which can be more dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to define. Nor\u00adbert H\u00e4nsli pub\u00adlished a book on self-harm\u00ading ear\u00adly in his career and to this day he offers coun\u00adsel\u00ading for NSSI and does work\u00adshops at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/phzh.ch\/en\/\">Zurich Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Teacher Edu\u00adca\u00adtion<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained that bit\u00ading your nails is gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly only defined as self-harm when done inten\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly, while com\u00adpul\u00adsive\u00adly pulling hair out is a spe\u00adcial form of NSSI, which is under\u00adstood as an inde\u00adpen\u00addent dis\u00ador\u00adder. Strong\u00adly scratch\u00ading skin is also part of it, how\u00adev\u00ader milder forms are more com\u00admon\u00adly con\u00adsid\u00adered ner\u00advous habits, which most\u00adly hap\u00adpen subconsciously.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/publications\/truth-about-self-harm\" target=\"_blank\">UK MHF<\/a> says that world\u00adwide, one per\u00adcent of the pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion self-harms. It\u2019s most fre\u00adquent among 14 to 30-year olds, and an extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary 80% of self-harm\u00aders are women. Pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adals believe that 10% of young peo\u00adple self-harm, but it could be up to 20%. That rep\u00adre\u00adsents at least two to four peo\u00adple in every school class.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nowa\u00addays there is far more infor\u00adma\u00adtion cir\u00adcu\u00adlat\u00ading about self-harm\u00ading or self-injur\u00ading. \u201cWhen I wrote my book 30 years ago, NSSI wasn\u2019t a well-known issue, not in any youth coun\u00adsel\u00ading cen\u00adter or clin\u00adics\u201d Nor\u00adbert H\u00e4snli told me, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean it didn\u2019t exist, but it was less prevalent.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He fur\u00adther told me that there aren\u2019t any prop\u00ader stud\u00adies of self-harm in Switzer\u00adland, but pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adals can make esti\u00admates by look\u00ading at the num\u00adber of peo\u00adple who suf\u00adfer from spe\u00adcif\u00adic fac\u00adtors that can trig\u00adger self-harming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accord\u00ading to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/publications\/truth-about-self-harm\" target=\"_blank\">UK MHF<\/a> there are some fac\u00adtors that increase the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of some\u00adone self-harm\u00ading, for exam\u00adple when they suf\u00adfer from a men\u00adtal health dis\u00ador\u00adder, have been neglect\u00aded or abused or aren\u2019t tak\u00aden care of by their par\u00adents. It\u2019s also more com\u00admon in the LGBTQ+ community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How\u00adev\u00ader, that doesn\u2019t mean every\u00adone in these cat\u00ade\u00adgories is affect\u00aded: NSSI can affect any\u00adone, what\u00adev\u00ader their age, gen\u00adder or state of&nbsp;mind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-harm can eas\u00adi\u00adly devel\u00adop into an unhealthy cop\u00ading mech\u00ada\u00adnism. A lot of peo\u00adple self-harm because it\u2019s a tem\u00adpo\u00adrary relief from over\u00adwhelm\u00ading, dis\u00adtress\u00ading thoughts or feel\u00adings. It allows them to focus their emo\u00adtion\u00adal, \u2018invis\u00adi\u00adble\u2019 pain onto some\u00adthing exter\u00adnal, which may make it feel eas\u00adi\u00ader to deal with. Oth\u00ader rea\u00adsons can be in order to feel some\u00adthing phys\u00adi\u00adcal, if they feel emo\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly numb, or to expe\u00adri\u00adence the feel\u00ading of eupho\u00adria that can arise imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly after self-harm\u00ading, or as a form of self-punishment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If teenagers don\u2019t learn a vari\u00adety of non-harm\u00ading cop\u00ading strate\u00adgies, self-harm\u00ading can become nor\u00admal\u00adized for them and end up being a life\u00adlong cop\u00ading strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What can you do to help if you know some\u00adone who is affect\u00aded? A 16-year-old stu\u00addent from my school told me that she wor\u00adries about react\u00ading wrong\u00adly, caus\u00ading the per\u00adson to relapse or even active\u00adly trig\u00adger\u00ading more self-harm, so it\u2019s impor\u00adtant to learn what can be trig\u00adger\u00ading and what&nbsp;not.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nor\u00adbert H\u00e4nsli and a spe\u00adcial\u00adist psy\u00adchol\u00ado\u00adgist for child and ado\u00adles\u00adcent psy\u00adchol\u00ado\u00adgy,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tanjarom.com\/\">Tan\u00adja Rom<\/a>, who works as a school psy\u00adchol\u00ado\u00adgist in the area of Zurich, both said it\u2019s always good to reach out to the per\u00adson and ask if they want to&nbsp;talk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut first you have to ask your\u00adself if you\u2019re strong enough and ready. Only talk to them if you have the nec\u00ades\u00adsary time to do so\u201d, Nor\u00adbert H\u00e4nsli said, \u201cHow\u00adev\u00ader, espe\u00adcial\u00adly when it\u2019s a friend, you can\u2019t become their ther\u00ada\u00adpist, so try sug\u00adgest\u00ading that they find pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal&nbsp;help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sec\u00adond stu\u00addent from my grade opened up to me about her own self-harm\u00ading. She said the worst and most unhelp\u00adful thing is when peo\u00adple make you feel bad about doing&nbsp;it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen some\u00adone just gives me a dis\u00adap\u00adpoint\u00aded or piti\u00adful look it makes me feel more uncom\u00adfort\u00adable than com\u00adfort\u00adable, but if they real\u00adly talk to me and ask me why I do it etc. it can be good\u201d, said the stu\u00addent. This can be a trig\u00adger, espe\u00adcial\u00adly when it\u2019s out\u00adside of any actu\u00adal dis\u00adcus\u00adsion of the&nbsp;issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even talk\u00ading only helps her when the per\u00adson has a kind and sup\u00adport\u00adive reac\u00adtion. She appre\u00adci\u00adates being lis\u00adtened to prop\u00ader\u00adly \u2013 and&nbsp;best of all is sim\u00adply \u201ca warm, encour\u00adag\u00ading&nbsp;hug\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of&nbsp;the young&nbsp;peo\u00adple I\u2019ve talked to think schools should take a stronger lead in edu\u00adcat\u00ading stu\u00addents about how to han\u00addle stress bet\u00adter \u2013 the soon\u00ader young peo\u00adple devel\u00adop healthy strate\u00adgies, the better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know from Nor\u00adbert H\u00e4nsli that teach\u00aders reg\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly have fur\u00adther train\u00ading on what the mat\u00adter is and how to han\u00addle it. \u201cThe schools I know are already doing a great deal on the sub\u00adject of stress man\u00adage\u00adment, and they do this in a con\u00adsid\u00adered, sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adic way and at reg\u00adu\u00adlar inter\u00advals\u201d, he told&nbsp;me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How\u00adev\u00ader in my sur\u00advey on Insta\u00adgram (of&nbsp;peo\u00adple&nbsp;between the ages of&nbsp;13&nbsp;and&nbsp;17 from&nbsp;var\u00adi\u00adous&nbsp;schools in Zurich) only 13 out of 70 peo\u00adple said they\u2019d had a pre\u00adven\u00adtion on how to han\u00addle stress.
